The Heart Asks Pleasure First, developed around a modal center of D, is divided into three main sections: the first and the last feature the idea of death, related to the heart as its ultimate destiny. The mood of the first and last sections is dark and the range is low. The middle part develops as a contemporary madrigal, featuring a writing that includes mild dissonances and an overall expressive and painful atmosphere.
This composition is the winner of the first (ex-aequo) award at the ISCM-Musika Bulegoa choral composition competition, 2022.
Carlotta Ferrari
Carlotta Ferrari (b. 1975) is an Italian composer and independent researcher with an international activity. She served as chair of music composition at Hebei Normal University in Shijiazhuang, China, and was an adjunct professor of music composition at the Department of Arts and Music of ESE, Firenze, Italy. She has lectured at La Sorbonne, Paris, France, and Newcastle University (UK).
Her compositions have been performed all around the world. In 2018, she was chosen to open Harvard’s Ceremony of Carols with her piece “Child of the Manger”, commissioned by Harvard University.
