The Heart Asks Pleasure First, developed around a modal center of D, is divided into three main sections: the first and the last feature the idea of death, related to the heart as its ultimate destiny. The mood of the first and last sections is dark and the range is low. The middle part develops as a contemporary madrigal, featuring a writing that includes mild dissonances and an overall expressive and painful atmosphere.

This composition is the winner of the first (ex-aequo) award at the ISCM-Musika Bulegoa choral composition competition, 2022.
